What is an electrical permit?

An electrical permit is a document issued by Seminole County or the City of Sanford that authorizes electrical work on a property. Before a licensed electrician installs new circuits, upgrades a service panel, replaces a breaker box, or performs other substantial electrical work, they must obtain this permit from the local authority having jurisdiction.

The City of Sanford and Seminole County require permits for most electrical work beyond minor maintenance. Common projects requiring permits include panel upgrades, new circuit installation, outlet and switch replacement above a certain threshold, water heater installation, air conditioning work, and additions or renovations. Smaller tasks like changing a light bulb or replacing a faceplate typically do not require a permit.

Licensed electricians pull permits because the code requires it, and permitted work receives inspection to verify it meets the Florida Building Code and local standards. Inspections catch unsafe installations and protect the property owner from fire hazards, electrical shock, and code violations that can affect homeowner's insurance or future property sales. When unpermitted electrical work is discovered during inspection or appraisal, it must often be corrected at significant cost. Working without a required permit can also result in fines for both the property owner and the contractor.
