What is a GFCI outlet?
A ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet is an electrical receptacle that detects ground faults and shuts off power within milliseconds to protect against electrical shock.
A GFCI outlet monitors electrical current flowing through the device and instantly cuts power if it detects an imbalance (typically 5 milliamps or more leaking to ground). This rapid response prevents serious shock or electrocution when someone touches a live conductor or uses wet equipment.
Florida electrical code requires GFCI protection in specific high-risk locations. Kitchens need GFCIs for all countertop receptacles within 6 feet of a sink. Bathrooms require them for all outlets. Garages, utility rooms, and unfinished basements must have GFCI-protected circuits. Outdoor outlets, pool areas, and wet locations (like under-sink cabinets) also mandate GFCI protection. Anywhere water and electricity might meet is a likely candidate.
GFCI outlets come in two forms: individual receptacles with a test and reset button, or circuit breakers installed at the main panel that protect an entire circuit. Some outlets also feature a line and load configuration, allowing one GFCI to protect downstream standard outlets on the same circuit.
In Sanford and across Florida, residential electricians install and test GFCI outlets during new construction and renovations. Regular testing (pressing the test button monthly) ensures the device functions correctly. Older homes without GFCI protection should be evaluated, as these outlets have become a standard safety measure over the past few decades.
